Very nice results. Some people have been waiting for this DVDR for a while. This 3-oav set about a mystery girl who inspires (or perhaps enchants) a boy into trying his skill at amateur boxing is considered by some anime old timers to be one of their favorites, though I'm not sure anyone could say for sure exactly why - the subtlety of how the story interweaves with the characterization, maybe. Osamu Tezuka's "Blue Blink" was the series he was working on when he died, so he was not able to see it all the way through. The series had a very limited release to DVD of the first two seasons, but that is all that has been seen of this series since it showed on NHK in 1989. In this story, a boy travels to some strange places on a magic bus accompanied by a magical creature ("lightning beast") as his friend, plus a pretty princess. The video quality of this version is excellent. NHK is deviating slightly from the original episode order in showing the series so I will use the episode numbering based on the current series order and also give the key words for the episode titles, which are mostly names of colors. This disk has episode 1, "Departure..." plus Gray, Rose, Ivory, Yellow, Blue (Aoi), Moss Green, and Cobalt. Additional DVD's in the "classic" series will be added to the list until all 7 volumes are listed. An early fansubber classic, redone by digisubbers from laserdisk. In this over-the-top-satire, a girl defends the earth from silly but dangerous interdimensional invaders with her oversized magical sword which unfortunately has a tendency to result in an unacceptable level of collateral damage, though her real concern is how to do something about the crush she has on her cute stepbrother. Not to be missed. Japanese soundtrack, subtitled in English. Approx. 2:00:00 total. 1299 [DVDR] "Cooking Master Boy" TV 1 - 8, A5, Curious Violet. This 52-episode feature by Nippon Animation has a lot of the look and feel of some of their World Masterpiece Theater productions for Fuji TV, especially much-loved series like "Romeo's Blue Skies" which we subtitled. The actual title is "Chuuka Ichiban" and the story is about a boy with an aptitude for cooking who travels China in search of culinary secrets but as he does so he finds himself stumbling on characters and clues which are part of a mystery which slowly unravels. His travelling companion is an attractive girl. Cooking is a big part of the show, in the same way that the game of Go was a big part of "Hikaru no Go". Sadly, the digisubbers (A-K mostly) appear to have wrecked the video by inappropriate deinterlacing and poor encoding, so the video quality suffered badly, rating only a 5, though of course we are grateful that the fansubs do exist anyway. The originals (with a Chinese soundtrack) had been inelegantly forced to PAL format, so I had to do a manual conversion of the source files to NTSC 23.976 format to make the DVD. Approx. 3:09:00 (Chinese w/ English Subtitles) 1300 [DVDR] "Cooking Master Boy" TV 9 - 16, A5, Curious Violet. See 1299. Star Princess Comet comes to earth to search for a missing prince who may be on earth. Once here she discovers earth is an amazing place. I thought the artwork for this series was almost like artwork from series of the 1980's, but without the usual technical ugliness. Moments of excitement alternate with warmhearted stories. There are 41 episodes total. Japanese soundtrack, subtitled in English. Approx. 2:45:00 total. 1371 [DVDR] "Cosmic Baton Girl Comet-San" 8 - 14, A7, Curious Violet. See 1370. A few remaining survivors of humanity obtain magical powers in order to prevent what is left of the world from being taken over by giant demons from a dark realm. This short 8-episode, 12 minutes per episode anime is quite a treat. It has at least two "naughty peeks" which qualify it as an item for mature viewers, but that doesn't get in the way of being a fun anime with a fast-moving story. Also included on the same disk is "Wonderful Days" movie. 8-episode series is approx. 1:40:00, the overall disk is approx. 3:10:00 (Series: Japanese w/ English Subtitles, Movie: Korean w/English Subtitles) 1376 [DVDR] "Da Capo" 1 - 7, A7, Curious Violet. An excellent 4-episode series in which a divorced father is driven to taking drastic steps to get treatment for his son, who is dying of leukemia. Much better than average performances by Jeong Bo-Seok, Yu Seung-Ho, and the lovely Park Ji-young. Korean w/ English/Spanish Subtitles. Approx. 3:22:00 total. 1613 [DVDR] "Densha Otoko" Live Drama 1 - 4, A6, Curious Violet. Based on a supposedly true story, this was made into a movie, tv series, manga, and other media. The story is about an otaku who prevents a drunk from harassing a young woman on a train. The shy and awkward otaku consults his online internet friends for advice in how to date the young woman. As his drama unfolds, all of Japan's otakus begin to cheer him on. In this version, the subtitles, which were originally crude and full of spelling and grammar errors, are spell-checked and reformatted. The final episode is number 11. However, the series was such a sensation that a second "special ending" was made, episode 12. The greatest of the Shilla Kingdom (676~935AD) historical dramas yet produced by KBS, this production rivals and often surpasses the quality of NHK tiaga dramas like "Musashi" and "Yoshitsune", especially with regard to the size of the cast, the incredible naval scenes, and the shots at remote Chinese locations. The story is about the rise to naval power of a former slave, Jang Bogo, played by Choi Soo Jung. Intricate, exciting battle scenes combine with intense plot development plus some romantic interest as well. Also stars Chae Si Ra, Song Il Kook, Soo Ae, and Kim Heung Soo. The video is reprocessed and optimized for display on TV, with custom formatted subtitles appearing BELOW the video, not over it. This series took about 3 months to reformat and correct the many problems with the subtitles, script, and video, but the result is a set of what may be the most spectacular Korean adventure series ever made. This disk was prepared from my original HI-8 tape archive tape. Note: though the video and sound are in general excellent, there are extremely short sound "dropouts" due to the age of the tape, especially near the beginning of the tape, which is common for from-tape HI8 transcriptions and which may be noticed by critical listeners who have home theater sound systems. In this magical adventure-drama set in a quasi-historical context, Akane and two friends are projected into what seems to be a parallel universe whose capital city had until recently been under protection of 4 divinities. Unfortunately, the divinities were rendered powerless by a demon named Akuran. Akane suddenly finds herself recognized as a high priestess and is charged with recovery of the divine attributes. Her two friends join six others to form a force of 8 guards (Hachiyou) to protect her. This is based on the same folk legends as the 1994 anime "Fushigi Yuugi". 26 episodes. Volume 1 of the Odyssey fansub, made from a direct-from-Odyssey tape using an elaborate tape-to-DVD process (over 45 hours of computer time). Based on a set of "Kadokawa Novels", this 13-part OAV series is a quest story of a heroic demigod "Utsunomiko" from Japanese mythology. Note that there was also a Toei movie by the same name which preceded this OAV series, which gives the story of Utsunomiko's early life. Our copy of the movie is not subtitled, so we won't be listing it alongside these OAV's. This disk is CV tape-to-DVD version 1, April 26 2004. Japanese language, English subtitles. Although this qualifies as a low budget anime, its excellent artwork and gripping story really impressed me. This atmospheric tale is about a young man who begins to suspect that he may have a genetic disease with similarities to vampirism. Some disturbing scenes and the grim mood make this volume suitable for mature viewers only. Also on the same disk: "Triangle Heart" OAV's 1 - 4. Their romance seems hopeless, but luck seems to be on their side. 1:46:00 (Korean w/ English/Spanish Subtitles) 1643 [DVDR] "Jigoku Shoujo" 1 - 9, A7, Curious Violet. Also known as "Hell Girl". In the story, a website exists which an aggrieved person may access at midnight. The site offers to take vengence for the victim. If the offer is accepted a mysterious girl appears to carry out the punishment, but the victim must also pay a heavy price. The stories tend to have a dark, wistful, sad, Japanese ghost story atmosphere like "Vampire Princess Miyu". Due to some new software and some experiments for this series, I was able to get good results putting 9 episodes on a single disk. This disk is also in standard widescreen DVD format giving the largest possible picture and best efficiency. I used a scaling of 15/16ths to keep all dialog and lyrics visible on both conventional and widescreen TV's with overscan up to 6%. This should give good results for new widescreen TVs as well as older 4/3 TVs. I also did parametric equalization on the soundtrack to remove an audio artifact at 12khz giving more natural sound. News: This series was a hit in Japan so it is possible that in 2007 there may be a Jigoku Shoujo third season, or some OAV's released. Japanese soundtrack, subtitled in English. A remarkable Korean melodrama based on the events during the latter part of the reign of Korean King Youngjo, 21st king of the Joson dynasty in the mid-1700's, and his stormy relationship with his son, the mentally unstable Prince Sado. The story is based on history and the surviving text written by the crown princess, "The Memoirs of Lady Hyegyong". At this time, Korea was split into two political factions, the Noron and the Soron, both working with and against the monarchy in a bid for civil power. The story revolves around Prince Sado who is torn between his cruel father and the relentless Noron, plus the intrigue of an unscrupulous court lady who schemes to gain power in the court even over the Queen. In this series, the story is played out very intricately, showing in detail the intrigue in the palace and the character of the historical figures. Note that this is a true melodrama, not an action epic like the Japanese taiga dramas, so there is only a limited amount of swordplay. Discount applies: final disk is free to those who have ordered the rest of the series. Stars Park Keun-Hyung, Jung Hye-Sun, Im Ho, Hong Reena, Yoon Son-ha, Kim Ji-Yeon. First half of the 4.5 hour end-of-year songfest. Dozens of Japan's top entertainers from every part of pop culture including enka, jpop, traditional, children's songs, dance, film music, classical, and more. As usual, the highest rated TV show in history. This year's show contains some of the most astounding stage lighting effects I've ever seen, in some cases the performer seems to be merged with the light show on stage, other times incredible transformations happen unexpectedly, even to the entire stage. New ozeki Asashoryu, the sumo sensation, is a judge. Enka stars include Sakamoto Fuyumi, Nagayama Yoko, Ishikawa Sayuri, Tagawa Toshimi. Jpop stars include Smap, Morning Musume, Boa, Amuro Namie. One fun treat was a spirited medly of anime ops done by a bevy of girl idols, ending in the rousing Cutey Honey song. Some segments for youngest viewers are deliberately placed in the first half, but otherwise there is a mix throughout. A treat for anyone who loves Japanese pop culture or music. This classic space adventure ("Ginga Eiyu Densetsu") is one of the best of its type and widely loved for its detail and complex plot. The warring empires have characteristics of European cultures, such as the very-Germanic space empire, and it reminds one of the BattleMech series, though no "mechs" as such appear in the story. Unlike most animes, this 110-episode series is based on a set of novels. The soundtrack BGM is largely classical music, well matched to the scenes - Beethoven, Strauss, Shostakovich, etc. This fansub version is the original Central Anime fansub, taken from master tapes and digitized by an unknown party with fairly good results, but the best thing about this version is that it is the original Sue Shambaugh translation, one of the finest of all the fansubber translators. Magical Emi is a classic shoujo series about a girl whose family does performances of magic on stage. Their family magic show is not especially successful until their youngest daughter suddenly finds she can transform herself into the likeness of a beautiful stage magician of the past. While transformed, she can do some bonafide magic, though her powers are somewhat limited. The series combines fantasy with comedy and drama, and a romantic element also appears. NHK began showing little time-filler segments showing archival footage accompanied by old hit songs, radio hits of Japan, sorted out by year. The name of the song and performer appear and the song begins, then you see a mixture of newsreel footage, tv shows and commercials, famous people and events, even such easily remembered scenes such as construction of a bridge or housing development, all the things that someone living there at that time would remember as being from the time they heard the same famous pop songs playing in the background. If you are looking for a famous song, you might even stumble on it in this collection. Events and places shown are described in unobtrusive Japanese subtitles. The slogan of the program is "Sou ieba, ano toki, kono uta." Because of the irregularity of the showings I missed a couple of segments. This could be very nostalgic for some people in Japan at the time, as I was. (1961) Most songs are not presented in their entirety. Performers of the songs are not seen onscreen. Approx. 2:00:00 (Japanese only) 1564 [DVDR] "Minyo Uta Matsuri Folk Music Festival 2006" 1-15, 1-22, 2-18, 3-5, A8, Curious Violet. "Minyo Uta Matsuri" presents a variety of Japanese music on stage. Many of the presentations are stage versions of traditional festival or local holiday dances, often wildly costumed, whereas others are traditional songs in which a vocalist is accompanied by a chanting and/or dancing troupe. Some of the music could probably be classified as Enka, or perhaps older Enka-like songs. There are instrumental musical pieces done with traditional instruments by famous soloists. Finally, some of the musical productions are obviously old folk music of traditional or even ancient origins, including some which might even have Buddhist or Shinto roots. Each week a region of Japan is highlighted. Hosted by Natsuko Godai. Approx. 3:09:00 total. 1637 [DVDR] "Minyo Uta Matsuri Folk Music Festival 2006" 5-9, 8-29, 11-2, 12-24, A8, Curious Violet. Two concert appearances by Misora Hibari: the first is a New Years Eve concert in 1975; the second is her 30th anniversary year concert in 1976. Originally on tape, but good quality - see sample frame: 2:07:00 (Japanese only) 1302 [DVDR] "Misora Hibari NHK Special", N6, Curious Violet. I was lucky to catch this excellent special on the life and music of Hibari Misora in 1999 or 2000, when I got it onto Hi8 tape. This shows her in many of her favorite performances doing her most-loved songs, and in famous film roles and public appearances. Unlike "tribute" shows, there are no other performers doing her songs in this show, and unlike "greatest hits" shows many of the songs are excerpts only, but in return this special covers an enormous amount of material. The Japanese are still in mourning from her death although it has been many years. Specials like this are profoundly nostalgic for those who loved her. Sound: High quality 320kbps DD5.1 (AC3) soundtrack made from the HI8 PCM sound. Sound quality varies enormously due to the varied sources of the clips in the show, much of it being from the 40's, 50's, and 60's, and it is also subject to the limitations of the tape medium. There is a single very nasty video glitch at approximately the 58 minute mark. Approx. 1:30:00 (Japanese only) 1647 [DVDR] "Mizuiro 2003" OAV's 1 & 2 [complete], A7, Curious Violet. A romantic 2-OAV story. Also on the same disk is "Okusama wa Mahou Shoujo" 8-13 ending the series -- see 1516 for details. 1220 [DVDR] "Momoiro Sisters" TV 1 - 24 Complete, A6, Curious Violet. This girl's-viewpoint anime from the manga running in Young Animal is quite unusual. The story is about sex, growing up, virginity, the first kiss, first dating, and other issues which are hard for teenagers to discuss with friends and parents. However, the subject matter is handled without being pornographic. The anime is a loose story told in short 7-minute segments in which 3 girls (one in high school, one older, and one younger) exchange advice, go on dates, and go through some growing-up issues. It is for mature viewers only due to frankly presented adult topics, but it is not explicit, and it is not a hentai anime. It gives a unique look at the Japanese perspective to watch this show. This anime was very inconsistently encoded by the digisubber and had to be split into over 40 pieces, individually reencoded with different settings, then recombined to make the TV-viewable DVDR. As a result this DVDR actually looks significantly better than the original digisubs. From digisubs prepared by AC. Japanese soundtrack, subtitled in English. Approx. 2:35:00 total. 1290 [DVDR] "Mr. Iron Palm" Movie, A7, Curious Violet. 2nd movie in this 2 Korean movies disk. A young and slightly naive Korean karate student arrives in Los Angeles searching for the girl he loved 5 years before. Stars In Pyo-Cha, Yun Jin Kim, Kwang Jung Park, Charles Chun, and Angelines Santana. Also on the same disk: second movie "The Foreigner". Mature viewers only due to adult dialog. This excellent NHK enka concert consists of songs performed in beautiful stage settings by Sayuri Ishikawa, Miyuki Kawanaga, and Yoshimi Tendou. The title means "Singing With Passion: No-holds-barred Enka". Shinkenshoubu is a term referring to combat with real swords as opposed to practice weapons, and in this case implies that no "soft enka" or j-pop songs are mixed in, as some concerts often do. A highlight of this concert is Yoshimi Tendou performing the Hibari Misora song "Kawa No Nagare No Youni" in a manner styled so close to the original that it sounds like Misora-san herself singing it. Several street-wise teenage girls in Shibuya, Japan, discover how to turn their cellphones into powerful tools to improve their personal life. This ultratech and avant-garde animation is visually exciting and has some unique and intriguing speculation about what ordinary persons could do if they had access to virtually unlimited information. The impact of this series on a TV screen far surpasses the effect of seeing it on a computer monitor. The unusual computer-generated characters are nearly doll-like, and the splendid voice acting is a big plus. Episode zero is the 13 minute "web" introductory special, converted from 15fps to TV-viewable DVD form. The rest are 6.5 minute episodes. The digisubs were by AF and were well translated. Some well-done computer animation is combined with the cel-based animation for space craft and mecha. Occasionally some jerkiness is detectable on this one disk due to imperfect inverse telecine. This is the KIKU-subtitled 13 episode 1996 miniseries based on the book by Katsukiro Kouyama, whose classic samurai novel acted as a sequel to Eiji Yoshikawa's original novel "Miyamoto Musashi." This Curious Violet version DVD set used the original source video, the same being sold by Samurai World Video, and did a complete reprocess on it, restoring its original untelecined frames, while correcting for the original's ugly VHS-EP chroma shift, degraded contrast, and severe luminance reflections due to improper cabling. The result is so superior it looks like a different version. The process required approximately 18 hours computer time per episode. Despite this, the video remains only a "5" on my tough rating system. See an unretouched before-and-after frame from the series here. A very intense, fast paced story, the lead role acted in a spirit of dignified machismo by Kinya Kitaoji. Subtitled in English. Approx. 2:20:00 total. 1338 [DVDR] "Sorekara no Musashi" 4 - 6, A5, Curious Violet. See 1337. Subtitled in English. Approx. 2:20:00 total. 1339 [DVDR] "Sorekara no Musashi" 7 - 9, A5, Curious Violet. A family matriarch learns that her children are more interested in her money, and decides to teach them a lesson. Two-part Korean TV-movie. 1:39:00 (Korean w/ English/Spanish Subtitles) 875 [DVDR] "Spring Dramas: Today's Menu" (Live), A8, Curious Violet. A lonely man with a daughter meets a lonely woman with a son, but the two families aren't easy to join together. Two-part Korean TV-movie. 1:39:00 (Korean w/ English/Spanish Subtitles) 1346 [DVDR] "St. Luminous Mission High School" 1 - 7, A6, Curious Violet. In this shoujo mystery-fantasy, a boy finds himself the heir to the directorship of a stylish girls' christian academy, but his first task is to solve the mystery of a student who disappeared. His best friend helps him by going undercover dressed as a girl student. Japanese soundtrack, subtitled in English. Approx. 2:48:00 total. 1347 [DVDR] "St. Luminous Mission High School" 8 - 13 [end], A6, Curious Violet. Completes the series. See 1346 for synopsis. Japanese soundtrack, subtitled in English. Approx. 2:22:00 total. 821 [DVDR] "The Star of Cottonland" Movie, A7, Anime Miners. This classic shoujo anime is about a tiny kitten who wants to be a human girl. The main character is drawn as a little girl, though everyone else sees her as a kitten. The amusing scenes of the tiny "girl" behaving like a typical kitten makes this one of the most charming animes I've ever seen. (1:36:00) (Japanese with English Subtitles) 1658 [DVDR] "Strawberry Panic" 1 - 9, A7, Curious Violet. Strawberry Panic is set in a girl's-only school with many unique traditions, somewhat in the manner of "Maria-sama ga Miteru". It is generally described as a "yuri" anime (Girl-girl romance), though that would of course be the newer fan usage of the term since strictly speaking the series is a "bishoujo" one. (Though the author of the manga is female, the series runs in a magazine primarily for boys or male otaku.) As with many such cases, the anime may have a wider appeal than the original manga. Regardless, I enjoyed the series quite a bit. My new process was able to put the 26-episodes on 3 disks instead of the usual 4. Japanese soundtrack, subtitled in English. Approx. 3:36:00 total. 1659 [DVDR] "Strawberry Panic" 10 - 18, A7, Curious Violet. See 1658. Approx. 3:36:00 total. 1660 [DVDR] "Strawberry Panic" 19 - 26, A7, Curious Violet. Ends the series. See 1658. Approx. 3:12:00 total. 1662 [DVDR] "Studio 4C Digital Juice" OAV, A8, Curious Violet. This avant-garde animation from Studio 4C is a collection of 6 shorts by different anime directors in the studio. Definitely not your "normal" anime. Satirical, whimsical, or just plain obscure, it's a treat to watch. Also on the same disk: "Taiyou no Mokushiroku" OAV's 1 & 2. Widescreen format. Approx. 2:34:00 total. 969 [DVDR] "Sumo 2002: Basho 5 (Aki) Days 14 & 15 (Live), N7, Curious Violet. Makuuchi matches, unedited, with NHK English play-by-play and commentary. The much-loved 38th annual sumo charity exhibition is a chance to see favorite sumo stars of the past and present on stage. Among the features of the program is "comedy sumo" in which sumo wrestlers (and gyoji) clown around to the delight of the audience. This year, the traditional ritual of the presentation and tying of the yokozuna's decorative rope-belt is performed with reigning yokozuna Asashoryu. New sumo stars and recent retirees are introduced and interviewed. Mock matches with sumo greats such as Kaio are staged against school sumo clubs in which the champion must take on an entire sumo club at one time. Top Japanese singers such as Fuyumi Sakamoto, Yoko Nagayama, and Kaori Kouzai sing songs and "adopt" a sumo wrestler and coach them to sing a song too - with results which range from pathetic to impressive. With all this and more, it's a night of fun for a good cause. Approx. 1:31:00. (Japanese only) 1230 [DVDR] "Sumo 2004: Basho 2 (Haru) Days 14 & 15 (Live), N7, Curious Violet. As a cultural goodwill exchange, Japan's top sumo wrestlers went to Beijing in 2004 to present an exhibition and a single-elimination tournament for the benefit of the Chinese audience. The quality of the matches was good, and it presents an opportunity to see sumo performed by the wrestlers in a low-pressure environment, which seemed to cause some wrestlers to do better, and others not. The three great romantic-themed shounen anime series in the opinion of many anime connoisseurs are "Maison Ikkoku", "Kimagure Orange Road", and this one, "Touch". One of the most-loved series by Adachi Mitsuru, "Touch" is a mixture of a nostalgic growing-up drama, romantic triangle, and baseball. There are 101 episodes in the TV series. Don't watch the movies until you watch the TV series, since the movies totally spoil some of the surprises. This set required a lot of extra work to fix some problems in the original fansub release, including the annoying audio whine and the low contrast video with unbalanced color. This CV version is based on the old from-tape DVD set hawked by samurai video websites and others - but the video has been completely reworked, with the video converted back to native NTSC-film and with corrections for the color smear and distortion of the original. Several experiments were run to learn how to best clean up the video for this set, with each episode taking 8 - 15 hours of computer time to process, but the results were well worth it. This one is from Japan's tumultuous 12th century: the tale of the historic hero Yoshitsune. The story begins with his childhood, unaware that he is living as a pawn of the warlord who destroyed his own father's clan and enslaved his mother as a concubine. The boy grows, protected by monks, to legendary proficiency in martial arts. Destiny moves him in a path to avenge his family's destruction as he becomes the pivotal general in the war which is slowly brewing. This is in my opinion the best taiga drama from NHK in 5 years. Each episode is followed by a short travelogue showing places in Japan which are mentioned in the story. Highly recommended.
