Despa Sumo DVDR List

Here are Sumo tournaments as broadcast by the NHK English-language service. I tried several levels of compression for these disks, from the one-day's-action-per-disk (2 hours) level which gives video which is indistinguishable from the original satellite transmission, to a level of over 4 hours per disk which has obvious signs of over-compression. As expected, the over-compressed disks are much more popular. Well, I have to admit they don't look that bad. I settled on a level of about 3.5 hours for each disk. I'll restart making the day 14 and day 15 combo disks in Spring 2004, since those few who ask for sumo disks seem to like them best.

1207	"Sumo 2003: Charity Exhibition"	N8	Curious Violet	The much-loved 38th annual sumo charity exhibition is a chance to see favorite sumo stars of the past and present on stage. Among the features of the program is "comedy sumo" in which sumo wrestlers (and gyoji) clown around to the delight of the audience. This year, the traditional ritual of the presentation and tying of the yokozuna's decorative rope-belt is performed with reigning yokozuna Asashoryu. New sumo stars and recent retirees are introduced and interviewed. Mock matches with sumo greats such as Kaio are staged against school sumo clubs in which the champion must take on an entire sumo club at one time. Top Japanese singers such as Fuyumi Sakamoto, Yoko Nagayama, and Kaori Kouzai sing songs and "adopt" a sumo wrestler and coach them to sing a song too - with results which range from pathetic to impressive.
