1690 "Enka Ipponshoubu 2007 Volume 1" N8 Curious Violet Enka concerts by Yoko Nagayama, Aya Shimazu, Miyako Ohtsuki. The Shibuya series ends on this disk and the new series begins, hosted by former enka star Kiyoko Suizenji. Like the Shibuya series, Enka Ipponshoubu is a series of single-performer concerts. The new series skips the personal history segment but it now includes a seated personal interview with each singer. The term "Ipponshoubu" is a martial arts term for a contest which is intended to be decided by whoever scores a single point first. In the case of enka, it refers to a single performer show. The Ipponshoubu series takes place in Fureai Hall. Approx. 2:18:00 (Japanese only) Std Prem

1301 "Fuyumi Sakamoto Concert 1999" N7 Curious Violet
My favorite of all the concerts I have is this one done in 1999 by the great enka singer Fuyumi Sakamoto. During the concert, she also demonstrates her mastery of the Japanese festival drums. This disk was prepared from my original HI-8 tape archive tape. Note: though the video and sound are in general excellent, there are extremely short sound "dropouts" due to the age of the tape, especially near the beginning of the tape, which is common for from-tape HI8 transcriptions and which may be noticed by critical listeners who have home theater sound systems. Sound: High quality 256kbps DD5.1 (AC3) soundtrack. Approx. 1:30:00 (Japanese only) Std Prem
1470 "Fuyumi Sakamoto: Recital 1994 & Ii Onna ni Naritai 1990 Concerts" N8 Curious Violet Two fabulous concerts. The stereo sound for these concerts is exceptionally high quality. Approx. 2:13:00 (Japanese only) Std Prem

The highest rated TV show in history in the entire world. Approx. 1:25:00 (Japanese only) Std Prem

998 "Kouhaku Uta-Gassen (Red & White Song Contest) 2002" Part 1 (Live, enka, Jpop) N8 Curious Violet
First half of the 4.5 hour end-of-year songfest. Dozens of Japan's top entertainers from every part of pop culture including enka, jpop, traditional, children's songs, dance, film music, classical, and more. As usual, the highest rated TV show in history. This year's show contains some of the most astounding stage lighting effects I've ever seen, in some cases the performer seems to be merged with the light show on stage, other times incredible transformations happen unexpectedly, even to the entire stage. New ozeki Asashoryu, the sumo sensation, is a judge. Enka stars include Sakamoto Fuyumi, Nagayama Yoko, Ishikawa Sayuri, Tagawa Toshimi. Jpop stars include Smap, Morning Musume, Boa, Amuro Namie. One fun treat was a spirited medly of anime ops done by a bevy of girl idols, ending in the rousing Cutey Honey song. Some segments for youngest viewers are deliberately placed in the first half, but otherwise there is a mix throughout. A treat for anyone who loves Japanese pop culture or music. Commercials are removed. Dolby 5.1 stereo 256 kbps sound - however, stereo separation in this recording is minimal. Possibly this was a stereo broadcast of a mono feed. Part 1 is approx. 2:15:00 (Japanese only) Std Prem

1656 "Memory Songs 1961 - 1972" N7 Curious Violet
This is quite a unique disk. NHK began showing little time-filler segments showing archival footage accompanied by old hit songs, radio hits of Japan, sorted out by year. The name of the song and performer appear and the song begins, then you see a mixture of newsreel footage, tv shows and commercials, famous people and events, even such easily remembered scenes such as construction of a bridge or housing development, all the things that someone living there at that time would remember as being from the time they heard the same famous pop songs playing in the background. If you are looking for a famous song, you might even stumble on it in this collection. Events and places shown are described in unobtrusive Japanese subtitles. The slogan of the program is "Sou ieba, ano toki, kono uta." Because of the irregularity of the showings I missed a couple of segments. This could be very nostalgic for some people in Japan at the time, as I was. (1961) Most songs are not presented in their entirety. Performers of the songs are not seen onscreen. Approx. 2:00:00 (Japanese only) Std Prem
1564 "Minyo Uta Matsuri Folk Music Festival 2006" 1-15, 1-22, 2-18, 3-5 A8 Curious Violet "Minyo Uta Matsuri" presents a variety of Japanese music on stage. Many of the presentations are stage versions of traditional festival or local holiday dances, often wildly costumed, whereas others are traditional songs in which a vocalist is accompanied by a chanting and/or dancing troupe. Some of the music could probably be classified as Enka, or perhaps older Enka-like songs. There are instrumental musical pieces done with traditional instruments by famous soloists. Finally, some of the musical productions are obviously old folk music of traditional or even ancient origins, including some which might even have Buddhist or Shinto roots. Each week a region of Japan is highlighted. Hosted by Natsuko Godai. Approx. 3:09:00 total. Std Prem
1719 "Minyo Uta Matsuri Folk Music Festival 2006" 1-06, 3-03, 8-06, 11-4 A8 Curious Violet See 1564 for general description. The 8-06 program has a sound defect which lasts about 10 seconds about halfway through, not affecting video, due to a glitch in the original satellite broadcast. Approx. 3:09:00 total. Std Prem
1637 "Minyo Uta Matsuri Folk Music Festival 2006" 5-9, 8-29, 11-2, 12-24 A8 Curious Violet

1410 "Misora Hibari Concerts 1975 & 1976" N6 Curious Violet
Two concert appearances by Misora Hibari: the first is a New Years Eve concert in 1975; the second is her 30th anniversary year concert in 1976. Originally on tape, but good quality - see sample frame: 2:07:00 (Japanese only) Std Prem
1302 "Misora Hibari NHK Special" N6 Curious Violet
I was lucky to catch this excellent special on the life and music of Hibari Misora in 1999 or 2000, when I got it onto Hi8 tape. This shows her in many of her favorite performances doing her most-loved songs, and in famous film roles and public appearances. Unlike "tribute" shows, there are no other performers doing her songs in this show, and unlike "greatest hits" shows many of the songs are excerpts only, but in return this special covers an enormous amount of material. The Japanese are still in mourning from her death although it has been many years. Specials like this are profoundly nostalgic for those who loved her. Sound: High quality 320kbps DD5.1 (AC3) soundtrack made from the HI8 PCM sound. Sound quality varies enormously due to the varied sources of the clips in the show, much of it being from the 40's, 50's, and 60's, and it is also subject to the limitations of the tape medium. There is a single very nasty video glitch at approximately the 58 minute mark. Approx. 1:30:00 (Japanese only) Std Prem
1262 "Nesshou: Enka Shinkenshoubu 2004" N8 Curious Violet This excellent NHK enka concert consists of songs performed in beautiful stage settings by Sayuri Ishikawa, Miyuki Kawanaga, and Yoshimi Tendou. The title means "Singing With Passion: No-holds-barred Enka". Shinkenshoubu is a term referring to combat with real swords as opposed to practice weapons, and in this case implies that no "soft enka" or j-pop songs are mixed in, as some concerts often do. A highlight of this concert is Yoshimi Tendou performing the Hibari Misora song "Kawa No Nagare No Youni" in a manner styled so close to the original that it sounds like Misora-san herself singing it. Approx. 1:30:00 (Japanese only) Std Prem

1207 "Sumo 2003: Charity Exhibition" N8 Curious Violet The much-loved 38th annual sumo charity exhibition is a chance to see favorite sumo stars of the past and present on stage. Among the features of the program is "comedy sumo" in which sumo wrestlers (and gyoji) clown around to the delight of the audience. This year, the traditional ritual of the presentation and tying of the yokozuna's decorative rope-belt is performed with reigning yokozuna Asashoryu. New sumo stars and recent retirees are introduced and interviewed. Mock matches with sumo greats such as Kaio are staged against school sumo clubs in which the champion must take on an entire sumo club at one time. Top Japanese singers such as Fuyumi Sakamoto, Yoko Nagayama, and Kaori Kouzai sing songs and "adopt" a sumo wrestler and coach them to sing a song too - with results which range from pathetic to impressive. With all this and more, it's a night of fun for a good cause. Approx. 1:31:00. (Japanese only) Std Prem
