Despa Drama DVDR List

Disks of the NHK (Japanese) Taiga Drama Toshiie and Matsu which I made for my own archives ended up as popular items requested by friends, and are one of the reasons that this Despa site exists. Now listed here is the complete Musashi DVD set, as well as the Shinsengumi DVD set and the original Toshiie and Matsu DVD set. Please note: these NHK dramas are NOT downloaded versions from the Internet - these are direct-from-satellite very high quality versions. [Unless otherwise noted in the description.]

I also have some Korean drama that I archived here. The differences between the Korean series and the Japanese are interesting. For one thing, the cinematography is better, the quality of the direction is better, and the pacing of the story is better. The writing varies. The topic of Christianity is treated with more reverence in Korea, as opposed to Japanese shows which sometimes portray it as a dark religion. Finally, there is less evidence of "cuteness" as being an important characteristic of Korean actresses - Korean dramas feature many adult Korean women of breathtaking beauty, but they are quite a bit less of a "little girl" in their outward presentation. My favorites of the Korean series are "The Truth" and "Shooting for the Stars". For Korean movies, I recommend disks 1126, 955, 980, and the classic film on disk 911.

Atsuhime is the story of a girl whose personal will and strength leads her country at a time of weakness in the Tokugawa Shogunate. 1531	"Emperor of the Sea" 1 - 4	A8	Curious Violet	The greatest of the Shilla Kingdom (676~935AD) historical dramas yet produced by KBS, this production rivals and often surpasses the quality of NHK tiaga dramas like "Musashi" and "Yoshitsune", especially with regard to the size of the cast, the incredible naval scenes, and the shots at remote Chinese locations. The story is about the rise to naval power of a former slave, Jang Bogo, played by Choi Soo Jung. Intricate, exciting battle scenes combine with intense plot development plus some romantic interest as well. Also stars Chae Si Ra, Song Il Kook, Soo Ae, and Kim Heung Soo. In this series, the story is played out very intricately, showing in detail the intrigue in the palace and the character of the historical figures. This is the KIKU-subtitled 13 episode 1996 miniseries based on the book by Katsukiro Kouyama, whose classic samurai novel acted as a sequel to Eiji Yoshikawa's original novel "Miyamoto Musashi." This Curious Violet version DVD set used the original source video, the same being sold by Samurai World Video, and did a complete reprocess on it, restoring its original untelecined frames, while correcting for the original's ugly VHS-EP chroma shift, degraded contrast, and severe luminance reflections due to improper cabling. The result is so superior it looks like a different version. The process required approximately 18 hours computer time per episode. Despite this, the video remains only a "5" on my tough rating system. See an unretouched before-and-after frame from the series here. Rarely has a samurai series maintained such a high level of quality in the story, acting, and martial arts sequences. Originally shown in 1978 on TV Asahi, it also stars Etsuko Shiomi. This CV version is based on the old from-tape DVD set hawked by samurai video websites and others - but the video has been completely reworked, with the video converted back to native NTSC-film and with corrections for the color smear and distortion of the original. Theirs would have episodes ranging from "A4" to "A5" on our scale. Several experiments were run to learn how to best clean up the video for this set, with each episode taking 8 - 15 hours of computer time to process, but the results were well worth it. This one is from Japan's tumultuous 12th century: the tale of the historic hero Yoshitsune. Discount applies: final two disks are free to those who have ordered the rest of the series. The story begins with his childhood, unaware that he is living as a pawn of the warlord who destroyed his own father's clan and enslaved his mother as a concubine. The boy grows, protected by monks, to legendary proficiency in martial arts. Destiny moves him in a path to avenge his family's destruction as he becomes the pivotal general in the war which is slowly brewing. This is in my opinion the best taiga drama from NHK in 5 years.
