I think this is based on the manga in Ribon, and I'm really impressed with how authentically manga-like the artwork was done in the anime. 1682 "Aria" TV 1 - 8 A7 Curious Violet A young woman becomes a guide on another planet in a beautiful watery resort which is styled a bit like a futuristic Venice. 1380 "Basara" 1 - 5 A6 Curious Violet & Odyssey
Odyssey Anime participated with us in making this DVD set of their classic fansub using our tape-to-DVD process. We used the original SVHS masters. In this great shoujo saga, Japan of the distant future has disintegrated into a chaotic desert kingdom ruled by despots. At the time foretold for the birth of a messiah, twins are born, a girl and a boy, but the boy who was to be the great leader dies unexpectedly, and the girl secretly takes his name and his place. 1497 "Bewitching Nozomi" OAVs 1 - 3 [complete] A7 Curious Violet - LGA This DVDR is made from the original Lupin Gang version of Bewitching Nozomi 1-3 using SVHS tape (ep. 1) and direct-from-subber SVHS master tapes (eps 2-3) processed through our TV studio deck (Panasonic AG7650 with TBC card). Very nice results. Some people have been waiting for this DVDR for a while. This 3-oav set about a mystery girl who inspires (or perhaps enchants) a boy into trying his skill at amateur boxing is considered by some anime old timers to be one of their favorites, though I'm not sure anyone could say for sure exactly why - the subtlety of how the story interweaves with the characterization, maybe. Approx. 2:32:00 total (Japanese w/ English Subtitles) Std Prem

1466 "Blue Blink" 1 - 8 A8 Curious Violet
Osamu Tezuka's "Blue Blink" was the series he was working on when he died, so he was not able to see it all the way through. The series had a very limited release to DVD of the first two seasons, but that is all that has been seen of this series since it showed on NHK in 1989. In this story, a boy travels to some strange places on a magic bus accompanied by a magical creature ("lightning beast") as his friend, plus a pretty princess. The video quality of this version is excellent. NHK is deviating slightly from the original episode order in showing the series so I will use the episode numbering based on the current series order and also give the key words for the episode titles, which are mostly names of colors. This disk has episode 1, "Departure..." plus Gray, Rose, Ivory, Yellow, Blue (Aoi), Moss Green, and Cobalt. Disk total approx. 3:20:00 (Japanese w/ English Subtitles) Std Prem
1487 "Blue Blink" 9 - 16 A8 Curious Violet See 1466. This disk has Red, Sepia, Primary Colors, Purple, Brown, Rainbow, Gold, and Green. Disk total approx. 3:20:00 (Japanese w/ English Subtitles) Std Prem

1218 "Brother, Dear Brother..." 1 - 4 Classic A6 Techno-Girls This is the first of our "classic fansub" version of the "Oniisama He" anime, in which our original SVHS master tapes are carefully converted to digital form, taking care to get the highest possible quality. Playback is done using a professional tv studio deck (AG7650) with TBC and chroma stabilization. Everything in the original is preserved, and we have tried to make viewing this DVD as close as possible to the experience of viewing the original master tape. Additional DVD's in the "classic" series will be added to the list until all 7 volumes are listed. In volume 1, the story begins as Nanako starts her first day of school at the elite Seiran Academy, a girl's school with longstanding traditions, including a school sorority for the most elite girls. To her amazement, Nanako is nominated to become a member. Another nominee is Mariko, a mysterious girl who seems determined to become Nanako's best friend. 1196 "Brother, Dear Brother..." TV 29-32 A8 Techno-Girls DVDR version of the digital master. Since the original digital master was used to make tapes, the notes included on the DVD mention that it is a tape, but this version has not been taken from a tape. Mature viewers only. Rev. 5-D. Std Prem

It is a standard TV-viewable DVD, with chapters, but without a conventional menu. 1426 "Combustible Campus Guardress" OAV's 1 - 4 A7 Curious Violet
Complete set. An early fansubber classic, redone by digisubbers from laserdisk. In this over-the-top-satire, a girl defends the earth from silly but dangerous interdimensional invaders with her oversized magical sword which unfortunately has a tendency to result in an unacceptable level of collateral damage, though her real concern is how to do something about the crush she has on her cute stepbrother. Not to be missed. Japanese soundtrack, subtitled in English. Approx. 2:00:00 total. Std Prem
1299 "Cooking Master Boy" TV 1 - 8 A5 Curious Violet
This 52-episode feature by Nippon Animation has a lot of the look and feel of some of their World Masterpiece Theater productions for Fuji TV, especially much-loved series like "Romeo's Blue Skies" which we subtitled. The actual title is "Chuuka Ichiban" and the story is about a boy with an aptitude for cooking who travels China in search of culinary secrets but as he does so he finds himself stumbling on characters and clues which are part of a mystery which slowly unravels. His travelling companion is an attractive girl. Cooking is a big part of the show, in the same way that the game of Go was a big part of "Hikaru no Go". Sadly, the digisubbers (A-K mostly) appear to have wrecked the video by inappropriate deinterlacing and poor encoding, so the video quality suffered badly, rating only a 5, though of course we are grateful that the fansubs do exist anyway. The originals (with a Chinese soundtrack) had been inelegantly forced to PAL format, so I had to do a manual conversion of the source files to NTSC 23.976 format to make the DVD. Approx. 3:09:00 (Chinese w/ English Subtitles) Std Prem
1300 "Cooking Master Boy" TV 9 - 16 A5 Curious Violet See 1299. Approx. 3:09:00 (Chinese w/ English Subtitles) Std Prem

1370 "Cosmic Baton Girl Comet-San" 1 - 7 A7 Curious Violet
Star Princess Comet comes to earth to search for a missing prince who may be on earth. Once here she discovers earth is an amazing place. I thought the artwork for this series was almost like artwork from series of the 1980's, but without the usual technical ugliness. Moments of excitement alternate with warmhearted stories. There are 41 episodes total. Japanese soundtrack, subtitled in English. Approx. 2:45:00 total. Std Prem
1371 "Cosmic Baton Girl Comet-San" 8 - 14 A7 Curious Violet See 1370. Approx. 2:47:00, Japanese w/ English Subtitles. Std Prem
1264 "Cosmopolitan Prayers" TV 1 - 8 [complete] A6 Curious Violet
A few remaining survivors of humanity obtain magical powers in order to prevent what is left of the world from being taken over by giant demons from a dark realm. This short 8-episode, 12 minutes per episode anime is quite a treat. It has at least two "naughty peeks" which qualify it as an item for mature viewers, but that doesn't get in the way of being a fun anime with a fast-moving story. Also included on the same disk is "Wonderful Days" movie. 8-episode series is approx. 1:40:00, the overall disk is approx. 3:10:00 (Series: Japanese w/ English Subtitles, Movie: Korean w/English Subtitles) Std Prem

1724 "Dirty Pair" TV 1 - 7 A6 Curious Violet "Dirty Pair" was an enormously popular manga and anime of the 80's, and could be considered a fansubber classic. Set in a space-traveling future, two bio-enhanced female agents of a corporate power engage in missions for pay. Code-named "Lovely Angels" the pair got their less glamorous name because of their tendency to cause disproportionate collateral damage in fulfilling their mission. We made this DVD version directly from SVHS fansubber tapes from Fuzzy Productions. The final two episodes are technically OAV's but actually serve as the final two eps of the TV season. The script is by Anna Exter. Approx. 2:41:00. Std Prem

1488 "Emma" 1 - 7 A7 Curious Violet
"Victorian Romance Emma" is a story of a young maid in Victorian England, and despite the title it is not based on the Jane Austen novel. Approx. 2:55:00 (Japanese w/ English Subtitles) Std Prem
1489 "Emma" 8 - 12 [end] A7 Curious Violet Finishes the series. See 1488. Also on the same disk: "Azusa Helps Out" OAV. Japanese soundtrack, subtitled in English. Approx. 2:55:00 total. Std Prem
1581 "Eternal Family" OAV A7 Curious Violet An OAV consisting of a series of short comedy sketches done in an "edgy" or avant-garde style, not at all what you might expect. Also on the same disk: "Air" eps. 8 - 13 [end]. Approx. 2:55:00 total (Japanese w/ English Subtitles) Std Prem
1392 "Final Approach" 1 - 13 [complete] A7 Curious Violet
This 13-episode series (12.5 min per episode) is an anime based on a Eicchi game, but it has a real plot and ending, and is quite fun, despite its typically outrageous premise. Japanese soundtrack, subtitled in English. Approx. 2:20:00 total. Std Prem

1344 "G-on Riders" TV 1 - 7 A7 Curious Violet
Three cute glasses-wearing high school girls wield awesome weapons to fight occasional UFO attacks in this comedy. Only slightly naughty in a couple of places, but I'll rate it as "mature viewers". Fun to watch, but it wasn't licensed for some reason - possibly because there are only 13 episodes. Japanese soundtrack, subtitled in English. Approx. 2:48:00 total. Std Prem

1412 "Harukanaru Toki no Naka de: Hachiyoushou" 1 - 7 A7 Curious Violet
In this magical adventure-drama set in a quasi-historical context, Akane and two friends are projected into what seems to be a parallel universe whose capital city had until recently been under protection of 4 divinities. Unfortunately, the divinities were rendered powerless by a demon named Akuran. Akane suddenly finds herself recognized as a high priestess and is charged with recovery of the divine attributes. Her two friends join six others to form a force of 8 guards (Hachiyou) to protect her. This is based on the same folk legends as the 1994 anime "Fushigi Yuugi". 26 episodes. Japanese soundtrack, subtitled in English. Approx. 2:55:00 total. Std Prem
1259 "Heavenly Chronicles" ["Utsunomiko"] 1 - 4 A6 Curious Violet
Volume 1 of the Odyssey fansub, made from a direct-from-Odyssey tape using an elaborate tape-to-DVD process (over 45 hours of computer time). Based on a set of "Kadokawa Novels", this 13-part OAV series is a quest story of a heroic demigod "Utsunomiko" from Japanese mythology. Note that there was also a Toei movie by the same name which preceded this OAV series, which gives the story of Utsunomiko's early life. Our copy of the movie is not subtitled, so we won't be listing it alongside these OAV's. This disk is CV tape-to-DVD version 1, April 26 2004. Japanese language, English subtitles. Approx. 1:38:00. 1312 "Hitsuji no Uta" OAV's 1 - 4 A7 Curious Violet
Complete set. Although this qualifies as a low budget anime, its excellent artwork and gripping story really impressed me. This atmospheric tale is about a young man who begins to suspect that he may have a genetic disease with similarities to vampirism. Some disturbing scenes and the grim mood make this volume suitable for mature viewers only. Also on the same disk: "Triangle Heart" OAV's 1 - 4. Disk total approx. 3:50:00 (Japanese w/ English Subtitles) Std Prem
1661 "Hoshizora Kiseki" OAV A8 Curious Violet
A single-episode OAV about a girl who is an astronomy buff, who meets a young man who seems to have some special abilities. Also on the same disk: "REC" 1 - 9. See 1661. Widescreen mode, approx. 2:20:00 total. Std Prem
1643 "Jigoku Shoujo" 1 - 9 A7 Curious Violet
Also known as "Hell Girl". In the story, a website exists which an aggrieved person may access at midnight. The site offers to take vengence for the victim. If the offer is accepted a mysterious girl appears to carry out the punishment, but the victim must also pay a heavy price. The stories tend to have a dark, wistful, sad, Japanese ghost story atmosphere like "Vampire Princess Miyu". Due to some new software and some experiments for this series, I was able to get good results putting 9 episodes on a single disk. This disk is also in standard widescreen DVD format giving the largest possible picture and best efficiency. I used a scaling of 15/16ths to keep all dialog and lyrics visible on both conventional and widescreen TV's with overscan up to 6%. This should give good results for new widescreen TVs as well as older 4/3 TVs. I also did parametric equalization on the soundtrack to remove an audio artifact at 12khz giving more natural sound. News: This series was a hit in Japan so it is possible that in 2007 there may be a Jigoku Shoujo third season, or some OAV's released. Japanese soundtrack, subtitled in English. Approx. 3:36:00 total. Std Prem
1644 "Jigoku Shoujo" 10 - 18 A7 Curious Violet See 1643. Approx. 3:36:00 total. Std Prem
1645 "Jigoku Shoujo" 19 - 26 A7 Curious Violet Ends the series. (A 3rd season is rumored but is doubtful.) See 1643. Approx. 3:12:00 total. Std Prem
1413 "Kakyuusei 2" 1 - 7 A7 Curious Violet
High school romance with many pretty girls. A new story, not a continuation of the story in the original "Kakyuusei". This is a pure romance anime for boys with an emphasis on character and artwork. Japanese soundtrack, subtitled in English. Approx. 2:55:00 total. Std Prem

1354 "The Legend of Galactic Heroes" 1 - 7 A7 Curious Violet
This classic space adventure ("Ginga Eiyu Densetsu") is one of the best of its type and widely loved for its detail and complex plot. The warring empires have characteristics of European cultures, such as the very-Germanic space empire, and it reminds one of the BattleMech series, though no "mechs" as such appear in the story. Unlike most animes, this 110-episode series is based on a set of novels. The soundtrack BGM is largely classical music, well matched to the scenes - Beethoven, Strauss, Shostakovich, etc. This fansub version is the original Central Anime fansub, taken from master tapes and digitized by an unknown party with fairly good results, but the best thing about this version is that it is the original Sue Shambaugh translation, one of the finest of all the fansubber translators.
